• Notes

  Ethel was a beautiful young woman who stood about five-foot-one and never weighed more than a hundred pounds. Ethel's father left the family when she was still a young girl, and her mother turned their home into a boarding house. As a teenager, Ethel did housework for local families to earn money. Around 1902 she married William Carroll and had a daughter, Marjorie. Shortly thereafter, they divorced. When Ethel married Dell, they both brought daughters named Marjorie to the marriage. To avoid confusion at home, Marjorie Bisbee became known as "Big Margie" (because she was older and taller), and Marjorie Carroll was "Little Margie." Ethel is remembered by her grandchildren as exceedingly gentle and kind. Around 1950 her kitchen was equipped with a hand operated water pump mounted at the sink; a wood-fired cook stove; an ice box; and an "A-frame" electric toaster, on which the toast had to be turned after it was sufficiently browned on the first side. She had a "cold cellar" that was entered through a stone-and-mortar basement, where she kept her home-canned vegetables from the garden, and large earthenware crocks of home-made sour kraut. Her house was heated by a cast iron wood stove in the "front room," and she had an upright piano in the "parlor," which she played when her children gathered for special occasions. All of her children were amateur musicians. After Dell's death, Ethel sold their house and lived with her daughter, Helen Stone, on Graves Street in Union City.
