  	Stephen and his brother Elisha fought together on the first day of battle at Gettysburg, July 1, 1863. Stephen was wounded by two "minnie" balls: One lodged in his chest, very near the heart, and he carried it there the rest of his life; the other was removed from his wrist by a military surgeon and was in possession of his granddaughter, Leona Marie Coye of Earlville, New York, in 1998.
