Luther Bisbee (1762-1856)

Information from Cathy French, direct descendant of Luther Bisbee.

Luther Bisbee

"Luther was born in 1762 in MA. He lived around Boston in his early years.  At age 16, he enlisted as a soldier in the Revolutionary War at Bridgeport, CT.  Due to his age he first served as water boy and a drummer boy.  He served in Capt. Joseph Cole's company under the command of General George Washington and took part in the closing of the Battle of Yorktown.  After the war, he and Sarah moved to Albany, NY in 1807 where he was a contractor of public works and turnpike building.  He lost a fortune there and four years later moved to Charlton, Saratoga County, NY where he was in the hotel business.  They then moved to Genoa, Cayuga County, NY where they took up 500 acres of heavy timber--in the midst of Indian Fields.  In 1820, they then moved again to Ossian."

The Bisbees were the primary builders of Bisbeetown (now Westview), a small hamlet on Ny state Route 436 in Livingston County, NY.  It is located in a triangle between Ossian, Nunda and Dansville.  There is a NYS Historical Marker for Bisbeetown acknowledging Luther Bisbee and depicting the settlement's original location.

From Livingston County historian, quoted by Cathy French, direct descendant of Luther Bisbee.
