Daniel Holden Damon, b. Abt 1807, Eaton Town, Madison, New York, USA d. 21 Mar 1871, , Putnam, Ohio, USA (Age 64 years) |
- Identification of Betsy Louisa Bisbee with this family stems mainly from her father's will, an online genealogy of the Damon family, and from the census.
1) In his 1865 Last Will & Testament, Reuben Bisbee bequeaths to his daughter "Louisa Damond (sic)."
2) The 1850 and 1860 census give Daniel Damon's wife as Betsey L. and Louisa, respectively.
3) Betsy Louisa Bisbee and Betsy Louisa Damon are both born in New York in 1818.
4) A Damon family genealogy has Daniel born in Eaton, Madison County, New York. No supporting census data has been found, but Eaton is very near Lebanon.
5) In June of 1837, Betsy Bisbee is granted a letter of Dismissal from the First Baptist Church of Lebanon, Madison, New York, an indication she is moving away from Lebanon.
6) Daniel and Betsy's first (known) child, Orlando, was born about 1839 in New York (Orlando will die in the 100th Ohio Infantry during the Civil War.)
7) In the 1840 census, Daniel, Betsy and Orlando are living in Columbus, Warren, Pennsylvania, next door to Thomas Damon, who is probably Daniel's father. One Porter Damon (probably his brother) is also living in Columbus.
8) In the 1850 census Daniel, Betsy, Orlando and Marriah are found in Clymer, a village in the Town of French Creek, Chautauqua County, New York. Residing in nearby Erie County, Pennsylvania, is Betsy Bisbee's probable sister, Lydia Reynolds. Also nearby in Bloomfield, Crawford County, Pennsylvania, is her brother Reuben. Her brother Joseph will move into the area in 1857.
9) By the 1860 census, the Damons have moved on to Putnam County in northwest Ohio. Daniel dies there in 1871. Betsy Damon is not found in the 1880 census, and it is not known if she remarried and/or died in the interim. Their last known residence (from the 1870 census) is in Monterey township, Putnam County, and they are probably both buried there.
