207 (Research):From "Obituary and Death Notice Index to THE CHRONICLE (online)
The Chronicle was a weekly Republican newspaper published in Scottsburg, Scott County, Indiana with issues available on microfilm beginning in February 1880. Indexing of the obituaries and death notices is underway and the index will be made available here in increments of decades as they are completed. Obituaries and death notices range from very brief mentions to extensive and detailed obituaries. The index often gives an indication of the extent of the obituary or notice, the more detailed the index listing, the more extensive the obituary or notice. Not included in the index are deaths for individuals such as national or state political figures or others not related to Scott or surrounding counties in some way, such as those listed in statewide "curiosity" type columns.
If you are interested in obtaining a copy of an obituary and do not have access to The Chronicle on microfilm, I can provide, for a small copy and mailing fee, a copy to you. The fee is $1.50 per obituary, paid in advance with your request. Additional information relating to an obituary, identified by a note of "see also" is provided as a bonus at no additional cost. Send your request, with the complete index listing(s) and fee to:

219 (Research):From Marlene Markotan: My Grandparents were M Sep 7, 1933. My grandmother's family lived a half mile down the road. 221 (Research):From Mike Johnston, The Wisher-Shaffer Project:
In her letter dated 3 Aug 1850, Sarah Jane (Valentine) Neely writing to her brother, James Fuhrman, states," Sister Ellen Wisher sent me a letter a few weeks ago." In the next paragraph she writes, "If I can I will come and see you in September. I will take with me my youngest child, Harriet. I should be glad to go and see sister Elen Wisher. Must check 1850 Census (Ohio) for Wisher. Among the documents received from the Orphans Court in Mifflin County, Pennsylvania on page 3 by my numbering, is a promissory note signed by Robert Valentine and David Wisher. The date is either 1816 or 1819. The point of interest is that a relationship is established between the Valentines and the Wishers. Another point of interest is the fact that in the Thompson Cemetery of the First Rush Creek Presbyterian Church (where John Valentine is buried) are two graves occupied by Ellen Wisher, wife of David and David Wisher. There is a two or three year discrepancy in age between that shown (on the tombstone)and the birth date we had from Lola Avellar.
Valentine, Eleanore (I18472)

222 (Research):From Mike Johnston, The Wisher-Shaffer Project:
James Wisher was a blacksmith by trade, was of German descent, (he may have been born in Germany) resided near Bremen, Ohio, and lived to the advanced age of ninety years, dying in Fairfield County.
(The entry in the History of Fairfield County lists James as the father of James G. Wisher. New information, including a transcription of grave markers in Fairfield County, strongly suggests that James's name was David and his son James G. was James J.)

223 (Research):From Mike Johnston, Whisher-Shaeffer Project (Ancestry World Tree):

At birth, he was named Thomas Wisher and he enlisted in the Army under that name. Later he was known as William T. Wisher. He was the youngest soldier in the Civil War, as stated in the National Tribune, Washington D.C., at the time. While younger boys were drummers and messengers, he was listed as the youngest regular soldier. He was born in Fairfield County, and was attending school when he enlisted in the Union Army, 62 nd Ohio Volunteer Infantry, Company H, commanded by Francis B. Pond, on September 7, 1861, at Zanesville, Ohio, and served with the rank of Private. He reported that he received a back injury at Petersburg, Virginia, in 1864, by handling boxes and barrels, and contracted disease of the stomack (sic) from eating bad food. On one application he is listed as being discharged in the field in Virginia, and on another, at Hilton Head, South Carolina, on November 1, 1864. He moved to Allen County with his father in 1869. In 1875, he moved to Jackson Township, Van Wert County, Ohio. He was a member of the United Brethren Church.

On June 4, 1890, at age 42, he made an application for a disability pension with diagnosis of disease of the stomach and rectum. At that time he is listed as being 5' 10" tall and weighing 155 pounds. He is described as poorly nourished. An examination in 1896, lists his weight as 163 pounds. He is listed in the 1910 census for Van Wert County as 61 years of age. In 1912, he is recorded as having a fair complexion, black eyes, and auburn hair.

"Mrs. Ivy Bisbee was a graduate of the the New Mexico Normal School and was well known in Silver City where her sweet disposition and womanly graces made her many friends. Her mother lives near Lordsburg and her funeral took place there Wednesday.
"The news, so unexpected, and coming as it did in the midst of glad and joyous preparations for commencement week at the New Mexico Normal, was a great shock to the students and to her sisters, Misses Eula and Francis and cast a gloom over the entire school, the students of which deeply sympathize with them in this the hour of their great bereavement."

Third County Polio Death Recorded; Boy, 13, Victim … Sept. 1949
Allen County's third polio fatality was recorded here early today when 13-year old Donald Lee Hatch, son of Mr. and Mrs. Versil Hatch, R.R. 1, Huntertown, died of the disease at 2:12 a.m. at the Methodist Hospital.

Death came to the Huntertown school-child less than 24 hours after hospitalization and was attributed to acute bulbar-type paralysis.

The youth who became ill on Friday, was rushed to the Methodist Monday noon when his condition became serious and was immediately placed in a respirator.

Survivors include, in addition to the parents,
One brother, George
And a sister, Carol Ann, both at home
A sister, Mrs. Leona Bracnt, of Huntertown
And the grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Hatch, of Albion

Private Rites Wednesday

The body of the latest polio-myelitis victim was taken to the Krider Funeral Home at Churubusco and was removed to the Hatch residence this afternoon. Strictly private funeral services will be conducted there Wednesday at 2 p.m. following which burial will take place in the Huntertown Cemetery.

Friends are asked to omit flowers, and, according to the youth's parents, any money received in his memory will be channeled to the local polio fund. Meanwhile no new cases were reported here by health authorities today, as Dr. Karl Eberly, City Health Commissioner, reassured local residents that "this year's polio epidemic is practically over."

Citing the fact that five polio fatalities occurred among city cases during the season's first 11 cases and no deaths in the last 23 city cases, he said that polio has definitely taken a milder turn. Few of the present cases he pointed out at the same time, will have permanent damaging effects. A total of 52 cases are currently undergoing treatment at the three city hospitals. Only one of these, Mrs. Paul Beam, 43, of North Manchester was described as "serious" today.

247 (Research):In the 1880 census, Hiram's daughter Mary has her father born in Georgia. His son Eli also has Hiram born in Georgia. Could the following James Dunnahoo be Hiram's father? Notice the spelling is consistent with the modern spelling of Dunnihoo (as opposed to Donohoe, etc.) Note also, that Hiram's 1825 marriage to Polly Phillips is recorded as Dunahoo.
