CHARLES C. BISBEE

Honorable Charles C. Bisbee, one of the early pioneers of Monona County, came to Belvidere Township with his son Charles W. in May, 1857.

C. C. Bisbee was born in Genesee County, at the town of Bethany, January 1, 1813 and died in Belvidere Township, June 21, 1871. He attended Middlebury College and was graduated August 21, 1833. He opened a select school in Bakersfield, Vermont, and was the head of the institution until 1850 when he accepted a professorship in a college at New Orleans, Louisiana (LSU). In 1857 he came to Monona County locating in Belvidere Township. By purchase of land warrants he obtained forty acres on section 11, 83, 44, and by his death he was owner of five hundred and fifty acres. In 1861 he was chosen County Surveyor and in 1865 C. C. Bisbee was elected to the office of County Judge. He was also the first County Superintendent of the schools in Monona County. He was married August 28, 1854 to Eunice M. Wheeler, a native of Vermont, born in the town of New Haven, November 12, 1818 and died in Belvidere Township, February 28, 1875 and is buried with her husband on the old homestead. They were the parents of four children: Charles W., George S., Francis O., and Marcella P.

Charles W. Bisbee, the eldest child of C. C. Bisbee was born at Bakersfield, Franklin County, Vermont, June 21, 1846 and died in Belvidere Township May 23, 1914. He was an extensive farmer of Belvidere Township, residing on section 11. The position of County Surveyor he held for four years and that of District Township Treasurer for sixteen years. C. W. Bisbee was married February 22, 1876 to Martha Graham, a native of Iowa County, Wisconsin. She was the daughter of William H. and Ann (Reese) Humphries, born June 9,1847. Charles W., and Martha A. and two children Fordyce W. and Marcella P.

George S. Bisbee, a younger brother to Charles W. Bisbee, and R. T. Reese opened the first general merchandise store in Turin September 1, 1887. George S. sold out to R. T. Reese in 1888 and moved to California.He was married to Ada O. Hathaway of Kennebec Township.

Fordyce W. Bisbee, the son of Charles W. Bisbee was born near Turin, March 3, 1877 and died April 9, 1948 in Long Beach, California. He was married on December 6, 1908 to Beulah G. McMaster of Ticonic, Iowa. F. W. Bisbee moved to Turin to make his home and became the operator of the Turin Bank. He moved from Monona County in the early 1920's and bought land near and a home in Greeley, Colorado. Beulah G. McMaster was born in Moville, Iowa July 4, 1888 and died February 2, 1927 in Loveland, Colorado. Three children were born: Marjorie M. (Mrs. Glen Davis) of Norfolk, Nebraska, Charles M. (deceased) of Onawa, and Fordyce W. (Mac) of Grand Island, Nebraska.

Charles McMaster Bisbee, the son of Fordyce and Beulah McMaster Bisbee, was born March 21, 1911, at Turin, Iowa, and died July 17, 1970 in Onawa. He lived in Hornick, Iowa, Greeley, Colorado and Turin, Iowa before moving to Onawa in 1939. He managed the I.C. Elevator in Onawa, owned and operated Bisbee T.V. Sales and Service, and later Gambles Hardware in Onawa. He married Willamina E. Block on October 17, 1937. She was born August 19, 1911 in Marshall, Minnesota and died in Onawa August 11, 1958. Charles M. and Willamina Block had six children: Dr. Allen C. of Stateline, Nevada, Dr. George W. of Santa Rosa, California, John A. (Jack) of Omaha, Nebraska, Mark M. of Orland Park, Illinois, Robert L. of Vallejo, California, and Ruth Ann of San Diego, California.

The Bisbee family resided and prospered in Monona County for over twelve decades. To date, the descendants of Charles C. Bisbee no longer live in the low bluffs of Turin or the Missouri River bottoms of Onawa. However the heritage of Monona County will always remain with them.
